David Molly Garnett

We Welcome Our Interim Pastor

The Rev. David Garnett

The Session of Tryon Presbyterian Church last week extended a call to the Rev. David Garnett to become our Interim Pastor—and he has accepted the call. He and his wife, Molly, as well as David’s mother, Carol, will move into the manse on March 12. Rev. Garnett will officially begin his service at the church on April 3.

Pastor Garnett graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle with a BA in Business Administration. He concentrated on accounting and started his career as Legislative Auditor for the State of Alaska in Juneau. On the side he was a volunteer TV weatherman for the nightly news on a Juneau TV station. He left Alaska to begin studies at the Seattle extension of Fuller Theological Seminary. He began his first position as pastor in 1988.

After 20 years as solo pastor at Powell Presbyterian Church in the Knoxville, TN area, where he became acquainted with the Rev. Dent Davis, the Rev. Garnett felt called to become an Interim Pastor. He has already served five churches as Interim Pastor, most recently at Unity Presbyterian Church in Denver, NC. His other posts have all been in Florida: Tallahassee, Temple Terrace, Tampa, and Sarasota. He helped each church over 18 months to rediscover their identity and mission and figure out together the kind of pastor they needed.

References contacted at these churches were unanimously positive. The chair of the Interim Pastor Search committee at Unity Presbyterian Church, Denver, NC said, “I’ve been in this church for 40 years and David Garnett has been the best Interim Pastor we’ve had. He really got to know the congregation closely, working with the pastoral search committee and helped us decide who we needed.”

The Rev. Garnett’s wife Molly is a North Carolinian from Rocky Mount and Kinston and a graduate of UNC with a degree in journalism. After a stint in public relations at Randolph Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, VA, she left to study at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, VA. After three years as Director of Christian Education at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone, NC she became a youth director at Powell Presbyterian Church. She then completed training as a chaplain and became a pediatric chaplain at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Tampa, FL. More recently she served as chaplain in the Charlotte area and starts March 26 as the Spiritual Care Manager at Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville.

The Garnetts have two sons: Nathan, married to Jennifer, works as an independent insurance agent in Mills River, specializing in long-term care, while Sam is a music teacher in New Orleans and heading for a wedding next January.

Members of the Interim Pastor Search Committee listened to the Rev. Garnett lead a worship service and preach and were delighted to endorse him to the Session as the Interim Pastor at Tryon Presbyterian Church. A walker and outdoorsman with lots of camping and travel experience, the Rev. Garnett will quickly fit into our outdoors oriented community. The committee and Session are looking forward to the Rev. Garnett coming to serve us.
